Be of Good Report

Chairman’s statement 2008/2009.

One of the pleasures of being Chairman of Wimborne AC is that all I hear of the club is ‘Good reports’. The Wimborne 10 was enjoyed by a record number of entries and is so well run. Our cross-country meeting was well put together and enthusiastically marshalled and our hosted league meetings have been successfully delivered. Athletes enjoy our coaching and our company. For a voluntary organisation we seem to have few internal wrangles and the view of us as a club by others is of a competent happy club. That should be a major selling point for us but do we make enough of those characteristics? Perhaps we lack a little ambition. Perhaps we stand back rather than scoop athletes into the club. Maybe we are not forward enough in drawing helpers in to the sticky web of volunteering. Thoughts to be left on the table.

While the Monday night track session has been withdrawn there are many other sessions to enjoy. We still however lack throwers in most age groups and finding them must be a job for 2010.

Our congratulations go to Jack Snook who overcame a broken hand to reach the English Schools in pole vault as well as excellent performances at various championships.

In team competitions Team Dorset to which we contribute in full measure avoided relegation from the Premier Division of the Young Athletes League. In the Southern Women’s League Wimborne contributed most of the Team Dorset outfit and with a bit more help from others could have got to a promotion level. The Southern Men’s and South West League athletes enjoyed themselves but perhaps this is where our ambition should begin. I would like to see us fill the under-13s boys and girls events and then build from there.

The roadrunning fraternity continues to grow and often a flurry of red and black sweeps past. This can be embarrassing for a cheering Chairman who can't remember names. Cross-country is working well and the squad seems to grow every Saturday morning.

Thank you to all our coaches and administrators. If you help us in any way then a huge THANK YOU.

Jerry Shield has decided to step down as Secretary and we need to replace him. Thanks Jerry even if UK Athletics never did catch up with your address.

2010 is coming. What are your ambitions for the year? How can we make them happen?

Peter Impett
