win at Ashdown – 14 July 2013
Impett reports from Wessex Young Athletes League
Wimborne AC confirmed their position as the leading
Dorset team in the Wessex Young Athletes League at Ashdown on Sunday
with good points advantage over second-placed Poole AC and fourth-placed
Poole Runners. The match took place in searing heat keeping team
managers and first aiders busy.
There were a host of highlights for the club.
Under-17 Abbie Hine broke the women’s club record for 1500m with a run
of 4m53.6. In the under-11s Quadkids event Erin Thickett broke the
league 75 metre record with 11 seconds dead. She went on to win the
under-11s event outright just three points ahead of Abbie Lovering whose
main points score came in the 600 metres with a time of 1m58.6. The
girls won the team event. Ben Butcher was fifth overall in the boys.
However, in the main league event it was the boys
rather than the girls who brought in most of the points. Liam
Murphy-Parry produced a storming run to win the 800 in 2.22.8. Rob
Hughes won the B-string and was busy scoring the points winning the A
race in the 75 hurdles and the B-string high jump. Elliott Symes won
the 1500m in 5.00.1 and the shot with 6m65. Daniel Hamilton won the high
jump with 1m35 and Ben Holland the long jump with 4m55, he was also
second in the 100 metres with 14.2. Nathan Hellier won the B-string
hurdles, Zach Fenwick won the B-string shot and was second in the
discus. Alex Long, surely one of the club’s most-improved athletes, took
second place in the javelin with 22m99.
Race of the day was surely the 80 metre hurdles for
under-15s which featured two finalists from the English Schools
Championships. Ryan Long lost out to Lewis Shepherd of Poole AC for the
second time but still recorded an exceptional 11.7. Ryan was also second
in the 100m in 11.8 and 29.60 in the javelin. Piers Copeland cruised to
a win in the 1500m with a fine time of 4.30.8 and Joe Miles doubled up
by winning the B-string with 4.43.9. Joe was also second in the high
jump with 1m55 and won the B-string shot with 7m98. Ross Crabbe
produced three second places and good points with 25.1 200 metres, a
40.7 300 metres and a 5m29 long jump. Dominic Flavell won the B hurdles
14.1 and Sam Waker the B long jump with 4m65.
In the under-17s Louis Coppard showed fine form in
winning the 400m in 53.3 backed up by Fraser Read in the B-string in
55.8. Ryan Webb repeated his 1m90 high jump and also took care of the
long jump 5m99 and the hurdles backed up in the latter by a Christian
Flavell B-string win. Christian was also second in the 100m in 12.6 and
won the shot 7m77. In the middle distance Ryan Walbridge was second in
the 800m in 2.07.2 and Jason Sotheran was second in the 1500m in 4.31.3.
All three boys age groups won their sections as did
the under-13 girls. In the first event Ellie Stark stormed to a 12.1
win in the 70metre hurdles and was backed up by Daniella Tomblin in the
B-string win of 13.7. Inevitably Grace Copeland was fully engaged and
won the 1200m in 3.57.1 and won the B-string javelin with 16m78 behind
A-string winner Martha Taylor with 25.10 metres. Rebecca May was second
in the high jump 1m25 and Fern Morrison ran an intelligent race to win
the B-string 800 in 2.53.2.
In the under-15s Ellie White was a main points
provider with a win in the shot 8m73, and discus 21.25 and winning the
B-string javelin. Training partner Jess May won the B-string discus
18.99 and was second in the A-string javelin. Pippa Hine enjoyed the
sunshine with a second place 200m in 28.0 and 300m in 46.6. Kelly Snook
was second in the high jump with 1m45. Caitlyn Hooper was second in the
A string long jump on 4m24.
