August 2010 – Cowgrove 3.8 miles Time Trial
Paul Mallett claims victory as Roy Long
sets new course record.
There was a great turnout for the
August time trial in near perfect conditions. We saw two debutants –
Becka Hughes and Alan Kirkpatrick – and there were 17 improvers. Of the
these, seven of them – Tim Box (1:00), Paul Teck (1:15), Callum Kennedy
(1:26), Robin Hughes (1:32), Steve Headley (1:33), Neil Hopkinson (2:34)
and Paul Mallett (3:15) – made time gains of a minute or more. Neil
hasn’t taken part in a time trial for quite a while, but those of us who
saw him competing at Sturminster over the weekend are unlikely to be
surprised by his time here.
First over the line on the night was
debutant Becka, and she was piloted for most of the trip by Kim Jolliffe.
The first runner home on a calculated handicap was Paul Mallett. The
margin of improvement from Paul is outstanding, its not too often when
anyone, other than a beginner can make a gain in excess of three minutes
in a single leap. Robin Hughes has been in fine form in the past couple
of months, and had won the two previous Cowgrove time trials. His time
gain on the night was another very healthy one but he was denied a
hat-trick of wins by the Paul’s massive improvement.
The fastest runner of all was Roy Long
who clocked 23:04, an improvement of 32 seconds on his previous time and
he set a new course record. The previous record had stood since May when
Andy McDonald clocked 23:12 – expect the 23 minute barrier to be broken
soon, with Roy, Andy and Jerry Shield all looking capable of making the
breakthrough. Roy’s closest rivals for outright speed on the night were
Callum Kennedy (24:13), David Long (24:15) and Ross Kirkpatrick (24:51).
Far and away the fastest of the ladies was Lynn Hutchings, although her
time of 27:19 was six seconds down on what she managed last month.
