On Your Marks!
Steve Snook reports from the
Bournemouth Open.

What a fabulous start to the outdoor track and field
season the Bournemouth Open at Kings' Park was. Great spring weather and
loads of competition.
It was brilliant to see so many Wimborne red vests
shaking out the cobwebs and laying down performance markers with which
to compare as the season progresses.
The Bournemouth Open incorporated a Quadkids
competition for athletes under the age of 11, and it was great to see a
small team of young Wimborne athletes making themselves noticed towards
the front in the track events. For those not in the know, Quadkids is a
multi-event competition aimed at the under-11s and consists of 60m, long
jump, 600m, and the vortex throw. Performances in each event are awarded
a points score and the athletes and teams with the highest score wins.

Ellie is airborne in the Quadkids (long jump) as her team mates look
on.
Unfortunately, at the time of writing the official
results have not been published yet, however, keep your eyes peeled on
the Power of 10 website or the Bournemouth AC website – they will be
there soon.
For the older athletes, the Bournemouth Open provides
the standard Track & Field fare (except for pole vault) and we had a
wide cross-section of the club competing. Sadly, your correspondent did
not manage to see everyone competing, but managed to get quite a few
photos. Some are embedded in this article, but the remainder can be
viewed following this this
link.

Many of our athletes came away clutching medals for
their efforts sporting big smiles. This is what athletics is all about
... do the hard work in training so that you can really enjoy the
competitions. You don't necessarily have to win, though that is a great
sensation, to feel good about yourself. Knowing that you have done your
best, but if you have made mistakes learning from them and try to put it
right next time out. Measuring your own progress can be immensely
satisfying.
Remember, if you did not get a chance to compete at
the Bournemouth Open there are plenty of other opportunities through the
season – but don't leave it too late ... you'll kick yourself!
