Phew! What a Scorcher!
Steve Snook reports from SWL at
Braunton.
The first South West League track and
field fixture took place on, what was probably, the hottest day of the
year so far last Sunday 17th April at Braunton, North Devon.
An exceptional turn out of athletes, families and helpers meant that,
for the first time in a few years, we took two minibuses, as well as
people making their own way.
It was an early start for those
travelling by minibus, and the first race was won by the Impett bus as
they arrived half an hour ahead of the Snook charabanc. Claims of
sabotage by the previous driver of the bus leaving it empty of fuel were
dismissed and the result stood.
We arrived too late to put up the club
tent for shade, though no one seemed to be too concerned as it was all
hands to the pump, ensuring everyone had their numbers and pins and knew
the times of their events during the day.

In total we had a magnificent turn out
of 35 athletes which helped us to a 4th place team finish at
the end of competition. Our under 13 girls were the best performing
team, as they were placed first against all the other under 13 girls
teams.
I have extracted the individual results
and listed them below.
It is difficult to highlight any one
particular contribution over any other as everyone scored points for the
club and there were many excellent personal performances. However, I
think there are some that are worthy of special mention.
A stellar performance by Piers Copeland
in the U13 boys 1500m was the best outright performance of the day.
Whilst most of the middle/long distance athletes may have taken it a bit
easy in the unfamiliar hot conditions, Piers ignored this and ran a very
strong race to not only beat the rest of the field gaining maximum
points for the team, but also broke his own PB and club record by 4.5
seconds, set a new South West League Division 2 record, and propelled
himself in to 2nd place in the national rankings on the Power
of 10 with a time of 4:44.3.

Another club record broken on the day
was the U17M pole vault. Jack Snook put a good series of vaults together
to clear 3.75m and was a whisker away from clearing the English Schools
qualifying height of 3.85m. It won't be long before he is vaulting
higher than dad can Long Jump!
Paris La Bouchardiere was involved in a
couple of close tough sprints. The most spectacular was her U13 girls
200m. In only her second run over this distance, she held back round the
bend and stormed down the home straight eventually overhauling the race
leader on the line in a very exciting race. She also won the 100m and
Long Jump making a hat-trick of 1st places.
Ryan Long also bagged a couple of
victories in the U13 boys 75m Hurdles and Shot Putt and a 2nd
place in the High Jump. Ryan could be one to watch in multi-events in
seasons to come.
There were quite a few other Wimborne
athletes who also won their events:
I would also like to congratulate all
the first time competitors for their efforts on the day. There were many
PB performances which is terrific this early in the season. Let's hope
it continues that way over the rest of the season.
Thanks also to all the parents who came
along as taxi drivers, supporters, and officials. I hope you will all
agree with me that it was a terrific day of athletics – certainly one of
the best I can remember with the club.
Well done everyone!
