Charlotte does Dean Macey’s summer camp

Charlotte Piper reports

During the summer holidays I spent four days at a Dean Macey athletics camp in Winchester.
We met Dean on the first and last day and he talked to us about his experiences and training.
He was really nice and very tall.  His talks were very inspiring.  The other coaches were an
English Athletics coach and some up-and-coming athletes.

Each day we did different decathlon events (mostly indoors because it rained, a lot) and we
were kept busy from 9.30-3.30 every day – so it was tiring!  I really enjoyed it and I learned
many new things that I didn’t know before.  My shot and javelin technique improved especially.
There were another 20 kids at the camp and I made lots of friends from other clubs.

‘Dean Macey (born 12 December 1977) is an English athlete from Canvey Island.  He is best known for competing in the decathlon, which he did from 1995 to 2008, winning the Commonwealth Games decathlon, two World Championship medals, as well as twice finishing fourth in the Olympic Games.  Retiring from decathlon due to injury, he has competed in the bobsleigh since 2008.’ – Wikipedia entry.
