Club Mile –  Shapwick – 9 July 2015

Steve Wyatt reports

On a beautiful summer’s evening the club recreated the ‘Charles Bennett Olympic Mile’ in honour of a local man whose story is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-18826780.  The race was set up and last run in the summer of 2012 and we followed the same course, warming up with a quick jog around/risk assessment from Jerry.

We held two races following a strict gender-neutral policy (men and women) with expert timekeeping from David Brylewski, Sarah Navin, Andy Olden and the world’s cheapest medals (scraps of paper with numbers on) being handed out to finishers by Andy ‘1 mile isn’t a proper race’ Horsley.  It was nice to see Bob ‘turn left here’ Caines also on the course.

Most people seemed to go for the ‘run flat out until the pub, realise the error of that decision and slow down, before gathering themselves for a sprint finish‘ strategy.

In the ladies’ race, youth won out with a strong performance from Sharon Hutchings who, although not in the same race, managed to skip around in a time bettered by only three men.  When I say skip, I of course mean run in a lady-like fashion (side saddle).

And to the men’s start: Robin Hughes, we now think, had missed the warm up/briefing and thought it was a race just to the pub, so quick was he to get there.  Usain Bolt would have been proud of that first 200m!  Overall, the race seemed to follow a general pattern for most runners of a lung-bursting ache followed by a lunge for the line and a final lungful of shouting to cheer fellow runners over the last few metres.

THE MILE - An unusual distance for road running, not as short a distance as you’d think and certainly not as easy as you’d think it should be. The full results are opposite:
