A splendid night’s work

The sun always seems to shine when we make our annual pilgrimage to Corfe Mullen for the Carnival Races. It presents a great opportunity for all our runners (regardless of age) to compete together. This year’s race was our most successful yet with Wimborne runners collecting more than half of the dozen trophies available … despite some of our biggest stars not competing. The race once again was included in the WAC Roadrunners’ Club Championships.

Proceedings commenced with the one mile race. The red vests dominated, with five of the first eight runners home representing Wimborne. Liam Murphy-Parry traded his runners-up trophy from last year for the top prize this time around. Liam made a lightning start, and despite a determined challenge from Michael Johnson, he couldn’t be caught. Elliott Symes led a group of three WACers – Dan Baynham and Max Meadwell were in close attendance – for 5th, 6th and 7th. Having an excellent run was first girl overall Abbie Lovering. Abbie beat girls up to three years older than her. Also amongst the medals was third girl overall Beth Kingswell-Farr. We had a good number of younger WAC athletes competing too. There were impressive results from second- and third-placed nine year-olds Ben Butcher and Joel Green who finished only five seconds apart. Kitty Sharp was the best-placed of the 8 year-old girls. There were some terrific performances from our young runners and it was great to see almost 20 of them competing.

In the 5k race we had 28 competitors, with a mixture of youth and experience. Youth won out, with 16 year-old Jason Sotheran winning the race, hotly pursued by his 17 year-old team mate Ryan Walbridge. The first of the WAC seniors over the line was Andy MacDonald, and he had Baz just seven seconds behind him. One of the outstanding performances of the night came from Matt Yates (u15) who was breathing down Baz’s neck (Matt has only graduated this year from the 1 mile race to the 5k). Sam Davies managed to stay just ahead of high-flying Lucy Ballam (u15) who picked up the trophy as 3rd woman finisher – well done Lucy! In the early stages of the race we had three Wimborne girls running together – Lucy, Abbie Hine and Maddie Williams (3rd u20W). Abbie was a trophy winner in 2013 – but she had been running a high temperature 24 hours earlier and had to pull up. Maurice Lange is a student from Hannover who has been training with us over the last month or so – it was great to see him involved in a race with us. He’s only got one more week with us before returning to Germany – it’s been a pleasure to have him training with us. Of the senior roadrunners involved, standout performances came from Nick Solomon and Ali Barry both of whom who won their age groups. The sharp-eyed amongst you will recognise much repetition of surnames, this is because the parents of many of our young stars got out there and raced too. Having said that, not too many of our senior women competed. As it was a Club Championship race this made it a bumper payday for Championship points those WAC women that did!

Thanks to all those who staged the friendly and well run race at Corfe Mullen.
