Busy Weekend for Wimborne Athletes - 9th / 10th June

Wimborne athletes had a busy weekend with the County Schools competitions on Saturday and a Wessex Young Athletes League on the Sunday.

Curtis Ormerod-Taylor of Brockenhurst College improved upon the club’s long standing 100 metres record winning the Hampshire Schools title with a wind assisted time of 11.15 seconds.  At the other end of the age range Woody van der Feltz broke the club 600 metre record for the under 11s coming close to the Wessex Young Athletes league record.  Woody tracked the Farley twins from Poole AC to the 300 metre mark then lit the blue touch paper and he was gone.  Woody won the Quadkids event for the club.

At the Dorset Schools Championships club members won at least twenty five first places.  The key for older scholars is to achieve entry or national standard.  Despite not having a track both Abbie Lovering (Queen Elizabeth) 45.5 for the 300 hurdles and Bethan Burley (Canford) 64.6 for the 400 hurdles impressed.  Bethan also reached the standard with her 10m88 in the Shot, an event that she has already competed in at the English Schools and has the javelin standard.  Abbie White’s (Lytchett Minster) 51.92 in the hammer also reached the mark.

Bubbling under, Ben Butcher (Poole Grammar) was only 9 centimetres shy of the 12.00 metres triple jump mark and then jumped a new personal best high jump with 1m57 in the League match.  Year 7s do not compete at the English Schools but Jakob Roberts (Allenbourn) jumped a stunning 1m 56 – a twelve centimetre improvement in his personal best to win the Dorset championships.  Ella Dalton (Parkstone Grammar) won the shot and Amy Darragh (Allenbourn) the hurdles.

In the Wessex Young Athletes league match on Sunday a Portsmouth the club finished fourth in the main competition and third in the combined Quadkids event.
