Club records
and Championship Best Performances
Steve Snook reports.
I don’t mean to harp on
about the weather, but it has been really poor since the bright sunny
start at our first match at Plymouth in the South West League. Last
weekend at Kings Park was, sadly, no exception.
Conditions on the Saturday
were positively cold and damp – more akin to a dour cross-country day in
winter than a pleasant late spring day. Sunday was not much better,
though at least it was dry. Add the north-easterly breeze to the mix on
both days, and this made it very difficult for athletes to turn in good
performances this early in the season. But, despite the conditions,
there were a number of success stories amongst the 24 WAC athletes that
competed.
******************************
There were three
outstanding performances from WAC athletes during the course of the
weekend which saw one club record equalled and two others broken
together with two championship best performances:
| Matt
Curtis was a clear winner in the U15 Boys 80mH equalling the club
record of 12.7s - no mean feat given the prevailing wind. That club
record had been in place since 1996. Matt also achieved a
Championship Best Performance with 2.80m in the U15 Boys Pole Vault. |

Piers
Copeland, in an exceptional run, again in difficult conditions,
managed to lower his own pb and club record for U13 Boys 1500m to
5:01.5. Before this year, the previous club record had been set in
1998. |
And finally, Jack Snook
managed to atone for his ’no height’ performance the previous week to
improve his pb in U17 Men Pole Vault to 3.50m, improving his club record
and setting a new Championship Best Performance. Before this year, the
previous club record was set in 2000.

In
addition to these performances, many of our athletes came away with
personal bests, which is excellent at this stage of the season and in
those conditions.
We
now have several county champions in the club:

Vault)

We
also had quite a few places on the podium:
Our

Maddy V-J (100mH)

Abbie Hine (880m)
In
addition to all our champions and medallists mentioned above, there were
also a number of athletes who were competing for the first time at the
championships, and whilst they did not come away with medals, they
enhanced their competition experience and some even came away with
personal bests.
Talking of experience,
there was good representation from club coaches in the championships,
and I’m pleased to report that all managed to walk away from the weekend
without artificial aids and under their own steam.
Well
done and congratulations to all our athletes.
