Dorset County Athletics Championships – 14/15 May 2011

Wimborne Athletic Club had a couple of excellent days at the Dorset County Championships at Kings Park, Bournemouth on Saturday and Sunday 14th and 15th May.  The unstoppable Piers Copeland took a bite sized chunk out of the Championship Best Performance in the under-13s 1500m with a new time of 4m 45.7s and then won the 800 metres comfortably with 2m 20.4s. In the 1500m we had a clean sweep with Tom Bourne second in 5.20.5 and Tom Boulton third in 5m 29.0s. Tom Boulton also took a bronze in the 800m in 2.41.7 and the discus with 16m68 and the pole vault with 1m50. Team mate Ryan Long won the high jump with a new personal best of 1m35 and was second in the shot with 6m83 and the hurdles in 14.2s. He also took silver in the pole vault with 1m70. Thomas Stokes led home three club-mates for his third place 30.7s in the 200m providing a real splash of the red and black.

In the under-13 girls Kelly Snook won the - high jump with 1m30, was second in the 70m hurdles in 14.0, and third in the long jump with 3m78.  Jessica May took a bronze in the discus with 14m10.  Maddie Diment was third in the shot with 5m84 and Maddie Williams was third in the 1500m with 5.57.9

The under-15 boys events gave Ryan Wallbridge two silver medals in the 1500m (4.34.7) and 800m (2.12.8) respectively.

Sharon Hutchings mirrored Ryan’s middle distance performances with a silver 2.29.5 in the 800m and 5.12.5 in the 1500m for under-15 girls. Charlotte Bourne won a bronze in the 3000m in 13.19.1

In the under-17s Matt Curtis was a double gold winner with a time of 14.7s in the 100 metre hurdles  and the pole vault with 3m40 and claimed bronze in the high jump with 1m70.  Jack Snook won a bronze in the long jump with 5m80 and in the shot 8m89. Callum Kennedy took a bronze in the 3000 metres in 10.03.05.

Hannah Winton also took double gold in the under-17 women with a 4m95 long jump, just shy of her personal best, and 10m53 in her favoured triple jump. Annabelle Brown was one of the club’s busiest athletes with four silver medals in the hurdles 13.8s, the discus 26.33m, the javelin 25.23m and the long jump 4m76. Laura Tan was joint third in the high jump with 1m35.  Saphron Taverner won the pole vault with 2m30 and was third in the triple jump with 9m58.

The club’s pole vault squad added to Matt Curtis’s gold with a first place for Dave Pearson in the senior men (3m60) and for Trudi Carter in the senior women (3m20). Trudi also won the senior long jump with 4m48 and was second in the shot with 8.00 metres. Paula Hine won gold medals in the masters 100m and 200m  and a silver in the long jump 4m30 and Simon Bourne also won a gold medal in the seniors’ triple jump.  Graeme Furley went the long way to take a silver medal in the 5000 metres in 17.24.0.  Steve Snook was third in the masters 200 metres in 27.5s.

Well done everybody on a splendid set of performances.  Let’s see even more of the red and black next year.
