Piers Copeland received his first
England call-up after a pair of impressive results indoors. He’s
already South West England under-20 Indoor 800m Champion and South of
England Indoor U20 Champion for 1500m. Piers has only recently turned
17, so this has been achieved whilst he is bottom of age-group. No
doubt the England selectors will also be aware of his fine performance
at Schools Games where he beat a strongly fancied field over 1500m,
and proved that he has the temperament to handle the big occasion.
His South-West England 800m race, was at the National Indoors
Athletics Centre at Cardiff, where in January he broke a Wimborne
Athletic Club record which had stood for 30 years. His first
international was to be an England v Wales U20 encounter. He stayed
with the England team overnight while his family and supporters were
there to see him at the stadium on the day.
Piers first joined Wimborne AC as an under-11, and he showed early
promise, amongst the club records he holds are the under-13 boys for
both 800m and 1500m. His dedication to his training, particularly in
the last 18 months, has really started to pay dividends.
