WACers at English Schools Champs – 5/6 July
Getting to the English Schools Championship is the
pinnacle of achievement for a young athlete. This year the championships
were held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, home of the mighty
Birchfield Athletic Club. Club members Ryan Long and Bethan Burley
joined 21 other Dorset athletes in making the trip and while neither of
them brought home a medal they acquitted themselves very well in
Ryan had hoped to make the championships in pole
vault but an injury to his hand caused a switch to the junior boys 80
metre hurdles. Ryan made the selection standard in the dying hours of
the qualification period hitting the 12.0 second mark. He then smashed
his personal best winning heat 3 in 11.7. A time of 11.83 in the final
gave him eighth place.
Bethan meanwhile was putting shot in the junior girls
category having achieved the 10 metre qualifying standard. In the final
Bethan was 12th out of 19 with 9m61. What is encouraging for Bethan is
that she was one of the youngest in the competition and still has
another year in the age category.
Congratulations to them both.
