Medals at the English Schools Ė 8 & 9 July 2016

Peter Impett reports from Gateshead

Two medals came home from Gateshead with club members, as a result of the English Schools Championships held at Gateshead on 8th and 9th July.  A record breaking nine athletes from the club were selected out of the Dorset team of twenty five though one was unable to travel.

Ryan Webb won a second medal going one better than last year for a silver in the Senior Boys High Jump with 2m09.  Piers Copeland won his first English Schools medal with a bronze in the 1500 metres.  This was a highly competitive race with Piers unwinding from the back to finish third in 3.53.12.  Piers came from such a long way back that the race commentator didnít even mention him until he was about to cross the line.

Ellie White was pleased with her 6th place in the Senior Girls Hammer and 46m28 having qualified for the final with 46m49.  Bethan Burley claimed a cool 7th place in the 300 hurdles with 45.87 compared with her qualifying time of 45.13 and Martha Taylor should be pleased with her 8th place in the Junior Girls Javelin in her first English Schools for a throw of 34m51.  Charlotte Ayton was pleased to make the final of the long jump with a 5m52 jump but could only record 5m28 in the final for 12th place.  Grace Copeland also made the final of the 1500, finishing 12th in a time of 4.51.62.  Pippa Hine got a taste of the action running 5th in her heat of the extremely competitive Inter Girls 100 metres in a time of 12.92.

Next year the Championships are likely to be in Birmingham and we look forward to more of our athletes being selected for these very prestigious championships.
