Andy Mac powers through the water to victory!

Chris Archibold reports from the February 2014 time trial.

Rain? What rain? Thirteen hardy souls braved the wet conditions on Thursday for the February time trial, and as it turned out they made a very good decision. The start was wet. OK - the start was very wet, but five minutes into the run a period of dry weather appeared, the rain stopped and perfect running conditions were achieved. It was also great to see two new runners stepping up to the start and putting in great performances.

Only seven minutes separated the first and last runner, with 9 out of the 13 runners coming home within three minutes of each other. It is always good to see the competitive streak come out as each runner pushes for vital seconds and valuable positions.

The person finishing first was Lisa Keay who ran a marvellous 24 minutes 27 seconds. However as this was her first time trial there were no prizes. However what is running without a reward? On entering her predicted time was on 30 minutes, so the reward for such a great run is a lovely new handicap for the next time trial.

Andy MacDonald produced the winning run of the night. Starting with a 6 minute handicap, Andy came home in second place and also achieved the quickest time of the night with 20 minutes 21 seconds. The next four runners had a good level of competition with Danny Webster pipping Ed Brandley, and then closely followed by Andy Olden and John Scott. From Danny in 4th position home to John in 8th there was a difference of 1 minute 26 seconds and in actual times a difference of only 1 minute 56 seconds. It is always good to know that the handicap system does actually work!

The time trial would not happen without the volunteers and a special mention must go to Kelly Williams and Jon Braund. I hate to tempt fate, but it did run like clockwork, and it was a real pleasure to see the number of runner turn up at the start considering the terrible conditions.

Roll on March, which promises to be a competitive run. Who will take the trophy from Andy?
