High Fidelity!

A new club record as seven WACers achieve Fidelity in the Dorset League.

Julie Gosling, Andy Horsley, Terry Simms, Dave Wild, Tim Box, Guy Miller
and Stewart Little have been flying the flag for Wimborne
at every league race this year.

To paraphrase Neil Finn, it was like four seasons in 10k for the final league race of the season at Boscombe. The first sprint of the day had been out of the lee of Kings Park stadium building to the start line on the track as there were gusting winds and torrential rain at 11am. This soon passed and by the time our runners crossed the finish line we were bathed in glorious sunshine.

With six men going for Fidelity Awards this gave us the foundations to equal our highest ever finish in the Dorset Road Race League. Julie was the sole lady who managed a Fidelity, and her contribution to getting a respectable placing for our ladies’ team at the end of the season was enormous. Julie’s achievement was particularly sweet as, in 2008 she clocked up many race miles in a Fidelity bid that was ultimately scuppered by illness.

So what are the qualities you need to achieve a Fidelity? There is complete commitment, determination, hard work and a little luck to avoid serious illness and injury. And if you do struggle with some niggles over the year a lot of courage and perhaps belligerence will get you to finish line. Certainly a couple of our ‘Magnificent 7’ have had races this year where they have been forced to grit their teeth and get on with it. Needless to say our Seven were in high spirits at the end of the race, with Guy supplying the champagne and half of it exploding out of the bottle!

On the way to their Fidelities our seven competed in the Milborne 10 in January, Blackmore Vale Half Marathon in February, March Hare 20, Rotary Quarter Marathon in April, Purbeck 10 in May, Poole 10k in June, Portland 10 in July, Sturminster Half Marthon in August, Littledown 5 in September, Weymouth 10 in October, and finally the Wimborne 10 and Boscombe 10 within 8 days in November. If we are crunching numbers that is 84 races, 744 miles and just seven runners.

A fantastic achievement.
