Bournado hits Poole! – 15  September 2013

Charlotte Bourne reports from the Limelights Open XC race

This was the first cross-country event of the season and we got off to a flying start with gold position in all age categories. Although not many turned up for the ‘Open X-country’ race there was good competition with people of all abilities competing, which was great to see.

The first race was the under 12s race, with two of our Wimborne girls competing consisting of Jessica Bourne and Chloe Fleming. And what a first race Jessica had as we watched her emerge from the heath in 1st position for the girls, then came Chloe in 2nd place who did really well as she was in the younger part of the age group. Wimborne only had one boy in this race, Ben Butcher. He showed real promise, he finished 3rd overall. Ben is still only 9 years-old, and the two boys ahead of him were 11 year-olds.

In the next race we had a whole team of Wimborne boys: Tom Bourne, Elliot Symes, Matt Yates and Michael Johnson. Tom started the first lap at a fast pace leading by about 200m to Dominic Willmore from Poole Runners (who has also had a fantastic season this year). Then followed Elliot and Matt with Michael close behind into the second lap. The second time we saw Tom there was no other competitor in site! He literally had blown the field away ‘The Bournado’ (Ian said). Soon after Elliott (3rd), Matt (4th) and Michael (5th) crossed the line to finish the Wimborne boy’s team. Well done boys these were fantastic results! Lisa Henderson was our only representative for the girls, doing her first XC race since coming along to the club.

Now came the u18s race consisting of all the under 18s we had, Ella Hearne, Joe Miles and myself, but not to mention an 18 year-old who also joined us, although he had already done a run that morning! Yes that is Callum Kennedy, when he realized he was able to run as a guest he jumped at the chance and with spikes on, he was ready to go. Our race consisted of three laps with Callum leading from the front and Joe behind taking 1st position for the u18s. Ella had a phenomenal run as she battled throughout, to not only come 1st u18 girl but also beat two boys!! Then I came in 2nd place for the girls (which felt great, even if there were only two of us, because it was just a great way to try out speed and endurance for the fantastic x-country season we have to come ahead).

After our race was the Special Olympic disability runner’s race which was great to have, as it promotes to everyone what we love best: running and fun!

It was a fantastic race to be part of and I would just like to wish Callum from all of WAC all the best at Uni, although it will not be the last we see of him because he will always be back for more training and races during the hols, and he said he will be there for the Hampshire League, which we can all look forward to, starting with the first one: Reading!!!
