Four seasons in one day? Well actually
it was only three. Can you guess which one was missing? We woke up in
the morning with snow falling, but by 6.30pm the remaining slush was
only a memory and our time-trialists were running in near perfect
conditions and this was reflected in some outstanding performances which
saw the vast majority of runners improve on their times and at least six
runners claim PBs.
First and foremost amongst these was
Christine Taylor. Christine recorded the biggest margin of improvement
we have ever seen on the time trial. Two months after her first time
trial she ‘found’ 6 minutes 15 seconds over just four miles. A fantastic
achievement, and for sure there is plenty more to come. Bob Caines
played a key part in this success as he judged the role of pacemaker
perfectly.
Because of this huge time gain, there
was a big gap on the road before we saw the next runner home. Maddy
Vaughan-Johncey was next, she ran far and away her best time trial, next
time out she should be able to go sub-30 minutes. Maddy set off on the
same time handicap as Kevin Elliott and the pair of them pushed each
other to their best time trial performances so far. Guy Thompson was the
fastest man out there and his time of 25:49 was also a PB. There were
more PBs from Andrew Olden and Terry Simms.
Richard Davies is finding his form
again after a long lay-off, with a time gain of 1:25 since last time
out. It was great to see Selwyn Richards back in the ranks after a long
time out, he recorded a very respectable benchmark time.
We had one time trial debutant, this
was Kirsty Harvey. Kirsty has been one of the stalwarts of our
cross-country team over the past few years and her first appearance on a
Thursday was as welcome as it was overdue. Watch this space for some big
time gains in future.
With all the outstanding performances,
if you were carrying a cold or were slightly under-par, dropping around
a minute would leave you right down the field.
Well done to everyone who took part.
The numbers were down a little from recent highs, almost certainly due
to some of us still recovering from the March Hare 20 the previous
weekend and others saving themselves for ‘The Grizzly’ a few days later.
Our timekeepers/recorders on the night
were Guy Miller and Ian and Wendy Kennedy. Next month we are reverting
to the ‘summer route’ through Cowgrove in April.
