Wimborne Athletes in National Success
Peter Impett reports
The beginning of September has seen Wimborne AC athletes enjoy
success at national level.
Club stalwart Dave Pearson was in action in the British Masters
Decathlon Championships at Sheffield over the weekend of 2nd
and 3rd of September. Dave won a second placed medal with a points
total of 5,548 behind Lancashire based Darren Scott in the Masters
45 plus age group. This was an improvement of 70 points on his 2016
performance. 18.4 seconds was a season’s best in the high hurdles
and Dave came close to a personal best in nearly every one of the
ten events including his speciality, the pole vault.
In the national Sainsbury’s School Games at Loughborough, Charlotte
Ayton gained a bronze medal in the long jump with a satisfying 5
metres 37. Grace Copeland only just missed out on a bronze medal in
the 3000m coming fourth in a time of 10 minutes 29.22. The School
Games is the culmination of a whole range of sporting activity which
starts with competition between local schools. The national
athletics competition is for under 17 age group athletes.
