Willett Arms 4 mile Time Trial

With the nights
drawing in, the time trial reverted to the street-lit Willett Arms
route, which we shall now be using until springtime. Twenty-two runners
took part and this included two time trial debutants – Annie Dougall and
Bev McLaughlin. Sadly not included was John Hutchings. Any hope he had
of winning three time trials in a row were dashed due to being sidelined
with sore shins.
The outstanding
performance of the night came from Teresa Grist who comfortably went
sub-40 minutes for the first time. Teresa had run half marathon distance
for the first time ever in the New Forest the previous Sunday, and had
in fact finished that race with a slightly swollen ankle after a drinks
station skirmish. Her powers of recovery are remarkable though as, by
Thursday, she was able to make a whopping six minute time gain,
finishing well ahead of the rest of the field. Honourable mentions also
go to Phil Burgess, Kevin Elliott, Barbara Frampton and Lynn Hutchings
(fastest lady) who all made gains of around two minutes. Our two
debutants both gave great accounts of themselves as they took up the
podium positions, with Annie Dougall going sub-30 minutes on her first
time out, and Bev McLaughlin recording an ‘actual’ time a few seconds
quicker than Teresa. The fastest men out there were Craig Dixon, Guy
Thompson, and Graham Whiffen who all went sub-26 minutes, with Guy
fastest of all on 25-flat.
Our
timekeepers/recorders on the night were Paul Grist and Ian & Wendy
