Olympic Torch comes to Wimborne – 14 July 2012

The torch relay entered Dorset on Thursday 12 July from Salisbury on its way to Weymouth. The following day the relay continued to Bournemouth where the flame lit the cauldron on the beach at the end of the day.

Whilst on the Saturday morning the relay was continuing along the South Coast, one of Friday’s Olympic torches was taken up to QE for Wimborne AC’s training session. In the preceding week it was announced that the torch would be at QE and we were rewarded with a bumper turnout (faces old and new) – probably more than a hundred!

Everyone was given the opportunity to run with the torch, and hundreds of photographs were taken.

Our Wimborne Torch Day was covered in the Stour and Avon Advertiser. On the letters page in the same issue under the heading ‘Sharing the sporting spirit’ was a letter from Mr Gordon Trevett of Corfe Mullen, it reads:

‘Can I pass on my thanks to Wimborne A/C for organising an opportunity for youngsters to run with an Olympic Torch at QE School last Saturday.

Both my grandsons went along and really enjoyed the experience and I have got some great photos of them running with the torch.

Having run over 20 marathons myself, including this year’s London at the age of 68 I felt immensely proud of them.’
