Olympic Torch comes to Wimborne – 14 July 2012
torch relay entered Dorset on Thursday 12 July from Salisbury on its way
to Weymouth. The following day the relay continued to Bournemouth where
the flame lit the cauldron on the beach at the end of the day.
on the Saturday morning the relay was continuing along the South Coast,
one of Friday’s Olympic torches was taken up to QE for Wimborne AC’s
training session. In the preceding week it was announced that the torch
would be at QE and we were rewarded with a bumper turnout (faces old and
new) – probably more than a hundred!
Everyone was given the opportunity to run with the torch, and hundreds
of photographs were taken.
Wimborne Torch Day was covered in the Stour and Avon Advertiser.
On the letters page in the same issue under the heading ‘Sharing the
sporting spirit’ was a letter from Mr Gordon Trevett of Corfe Mullen, it
pass on my thanks to Wimborne A/C for organising an opportunity for
youngsters to run with an Olympic Torch at QE School last Saturday.
grandsons went along and really enjoyed the experience and I have got
some great photos of them running with the torch.
run over 20 marathons myself, including this year’s London at the age of
68 I felt immensely proud of them.’
