Kennedy reports from the National Indoors Athletics Centre
a treble - Wimborne AC record, Grand Prix record, Cardiff Met
While most of the club’s middle distance runners were involved the
Dorset County Cross-Country Championships, two – Piers Copeland and
Maddy Johnson – headed off to compete in the National Indoor
Athletics Centre in Cardiff. The first of the Cardiff Met Grand Prix
meetings of the 2018/19 season certainly turned out to be a
‘Christmas Classic’ for Piers.
arrived feeling confident, on the back of a solid block of training
since returning to Uni in September. His confidence proved not to be
misplaced. A fantastic performance saw Piers take more than 12
seconds off his own club record. He went under eight minutes for the
first time over 3000m. This also saw him break the Grand Prix and
Cardiff Met records too!
Maddy Johnson also travelled with good cause for optimism, but she
endured quite different fortunes. She was going well, and on target
for a sub-10 minute 3000, when she suffered a calf strain with only
a handful of laps to go. We wish Maddy well with her recovery and
look forward to seeing her back in training soon.
Abbie Lovering it was her second recent appearance at the indoor
track at Cardiff, having also competed on 2 December in the Welsh
Athletics Junior Open over both 200 and 300 metres. Abbie recorded
42.79 over 300m on this occasion.
the field events Joe Miles (Wimborne AC/Nottingham Uni) competed in
the high jump. This is Joe’s first meeting of the 2018/19 indoor
season, he cleared 1.90m, his best ever performance indoors.
Congratulations to Piers on what must surely be one of the finest
track performances from a Wimborne athlete in the club’s history.
