Quad Kids Summer 2017

 Paula Hine reports

The summer of 2017 has been a great season for WACs under 11 Quad Kids.  Fabulous fun and some great performances.

For those of you who donít know, Quad Kids is the name given to the Track and Field competition available to young athletes.  They all compete in four events:  75m sprint, 600m run, howler throw and long jump.  They are awarded points for their performance in each event and the points are totalled up for their final score.  The individual scores are then added together to get an overall team score in a club event.

Wimborne AC enters the Wessex Young Athletes League where the Quad Kids compete alongside the older athletes at the club.  It is a great introduction to the sport for them and encourages a good team spirit, something Wimborne athletes have plenty of.

Wimborne have had nearly thirty athletes competing in Quad Kids this season and have finished in seventh place overall in the league.  There is a total of twenty-four clubs in the league.  We are extremely proud of them, and their parents, for showing a strong commitment to competing early in their athletics careers.  In match two they scored more points as a team than any other Quad Kids team competing in the league at other venues on that day.  Come on Wimborne!!

Alongside the fantastic team results we have also had some very exciting individual performances:

Harry Bunting equalled the club record for the 75m, running 11.0 secs at Portsmouth.

Woody Van Der Feltz broke the 600m record running 1.54 at Poole.

Freya Blundell broke both the girls 75m record running 10.9 secs and the howler record at Portsmouth with a throw of 28.10m.

In the last meeting of the season at the Bournemouth Open, the Quad Kids events doubled up as the Dorset County Championships.  Woody started off the day with a fine run in the 75m and was crowned Dorset Champion.  He went on to win his heat in the 600m and finished in second place overall, he was closely followed by Jack Williams who also had a great race to finish third.  Freya had an awesome day winning all four individual events and consequently the overall Quad Kids event.  We now look forward to her competing as an U-13 next season Ė GO FREYA!!

For me the season has been such a success due to the help and support that the Quad Kids squad have received from the coaches who work with them, the positive and team attitude that the parents have shown, and the fun that we have all had!!

Bring on 2018!!
