The 10k club records tumble at Poole – 26 December
Kennedy reports from the Round the Lakes 10k
Wimborne AC’s men’s 10k club record was broken at Poole Park on
Boxing Day. The previous mark of 32:53 had been recorded by Andy
Clements in December 1998. The early race leader at the Round the
Lakes Race was Dan Mulryan of Poole Runners, but by lap 2 (of 3) he
had WAC’s Piers Copeland on his shoulder.
race concludes with a final lap of the cricket pitch’s boundary. As
Piers and Dan reached the cricket pitch for the last time they were
still very much together. A big push from Piers with around 100
metres to go, gave Piers victory and a winning time of 31:56, a
margin of five seconds over Dan. These two were well clear of the
field, with the third place finisher crossing the line in 32:51.
WAC women’s club record also tumbled. It was a family affair as
Grace Copeland romped home in a time of 35:20. That was over two and
half minutes ahead of the next woman finisher, and an enormous four
and half minute-plus improvement on the club record that had been
recorded by Amanda Jane Kerr which had also stood since 1998.
Grace’s time is the third fastest recorded in the UK over 10k for an
under-20 women in 2018 according to runbritain rankings.
