Wessex League Race 2  – 28 November – Old Sarum

Another win and three podiums.

Hudson’s Field at Salisbury is a cold old place at the best of times, and the light dusting of snow and weather coming in from Scandinavia meant that this year was no exception. Our WACers were a little depleted, there were a few missing with seasonal ailments, and others lost to clashes of dates with school events.

The new format WXC sees the senior race go off first, men and women, with the under-17s all going off at the same time. The under-17 women were to do two big laps; the under-17 boys and the women, three laps; and the senior men four big laps. The conditions dictated that few runners left the start line in just vest and shorts. This meant that as each lap passed items of clothing were being jettisoned towards the WAC supporters. We had a fine collection of hats, gloves, and tops as our runners started to warm up – although one or two felt they may have been a bit too hasty in discarding some of their kit. With the ladies doing one lap less than the men, the first WACer in was Lynn Hutchings, 3rd place in the ladies race (equalling her result in the first Wessex League race), with Paula Hine coming in 13th. Unfortunately we had no third WAC lady finisher so were unable to record a team score. For the men both Mark Copeland and Graham Whiffen improved significantly on their first Wessex race. Rich House clinched the third scoring spot behind Graham. Gerry Hutchings was just one place back from Rich, and Phil Burgess completed the team. Every single member of our senior team on the day (both men and women) are veterans. For the men, the positive aspect of this is that it meant we were able to claim second place in Vets team category.

It was a little disappointing that we failed to field full teams in any of the junior categories. Numbers competing in the under-11s race were encouragingly high over all. Unfortunately we were only able to contribute two runners. Both Bethan Burley and Pippa Hine improved significantly from the first race of the season. At Avon Heath they had been 9th and 10th girls in, this time around they claimed 4th and 6th, well done girls!

Although the numbers competing in the Wessex races is low when compared to the Hampshires, some quality runners do compete. Piers, fresh from his second place at Goodwood (HXC), had to settle for 3rd place this time out in the under-13s, meanwhile Jamie Brash improved from the 12th place he recorded in his first Wessex race of the season. Abbie Hine’s fine form of this campaign continued as she led home the under-15 girls by a comfortable margin. That’s two wins in two races in the Wessex so far – well done Abbie!

The final race of the day was the under-15s. We fielded one boy – Ryan Walbridge, and one girl – Sharon Hutchings. Ryan’s improvement in getting away off the start line was in evidence once again. He looked very strong as he steamed in towards the finish line to claim 3rd place. Sharon looked much sharper for this race. Her 4th was her best placing of the season so far and her run was probably the most improved performance by any WACer on the day.

The next Wessex League race takes place at the mighty Ham Hill on 23 January.
