National Schools XC Championships, Nottingham  – 19 March

Abbie Hine  and Ryan Walbridge report.

We set of at 7:02 in the morning for the English Schools Cross-Country  Championships at Nottingham on 19th March. It started as a cold, frosty, foggy morning and gradually turned into a glorious day at a glorious park with a massive, beautiful house and lots of deer.

This was Ryan’s second time and Abbie’s first time at this event. When we got there, we walked the course with Bobbie (the dog). The course was very firm underfoot and wide. Once finishing the walk, we were looking for the Dorset team base. After finding the Dorset team, we changed into 9mm spikes, to suit the conditions, and got warmed up ready for our races!

Once warmed up, Ryan set off into the starting pens. The gun went off and the race began, 4km to go. The course for Ryan’s race was two big laps with a gentle slope leading up to a short but steep hill, before dropping around a bend down towards the finish line, which was located at the bottom of the steep hill.

Soon after, it was Abbie’s race. She started off slowly, as she was at the back of the pen, but finished strongly on the hill, overtaking several runners on the downward slope.

Ryan came 163rd out of 331 and was third Dorset – Abbie was 295th out of 347 and was the 7th Dorset runner in.
