Roy Long sets sub-23 course record as
Becka Hughes claims her first TT trophy.
In August a new time trial course
record was set by Roy Long. With speed merchants Roy and Andy McDonald
both lining up for September’s trial, the record looked immediately
under threat. Sure enough a new record was set, Roy recorded the first
sub-23 minute time. However, there was a mighty tussle between the two
big guns, as Roy didn’t catch Andy McD (there was a 30 seconds
difference in their handicaps) until the final few bumps in the road
approaching the finish line. Just to spice things up nicely for next
month there was a storming run from David Long and this puts him on
course for a head-to-head against Andy McD, as David’s time was a mere
four seconds slower than Andy’s.
The handicap time trial rewards the
biggest improvers, rather than the fastest runners though. There were
outstanding performances from Becka Hughes, Kim Brackley and Kelly
Williams. These three took the podium positions. Becka and Kim set off
on the same handicap, so had a ding-dong battle from start to finish.
They were separated by just four seconds at the end. They had to push to
the limit in order to catch Kelly who had set off one minute before
them. The pair caught Kelly as the Cuthbury came into site. In another
month the improvement that Steve Headley showed would have been good
enough to land him the trophy, but he picked the wrong month to come
good!
We welcomed two new runners to the time
trial, Annette Baxter and Val Clark. They were set off on a estimated
handicap. Bob Caines did a great job of piloting round our two
newcomers. We look forward to seeing them next month now that we can
calculate their handicaps.
Once again the mighty Lynn Hutchings
recorded the fastest ladies’ time. Lynn’s time of 27:04 set in May this
year looks as if it might survive into the new year as the ladies’
course record.
Our timekeepers did a great job, thank
you to Wendy Kennedy and Elaine Long. Full results for the time trial
