Southern Men’s League – Abingdon – 16 May 2009
A small but select band of
WAC athletes made the journey up to Abingdon, alongside colleagues from
Poole AC, to compete in the second fixture of this league on what was a
very blustery afternoon. So blustery, in fact, that the pole vault
uprights were blown down, and the netting around the hammer and discus
circle decided to collapse. Fortunately for the throwers there was
another throwing circle in a more sheltered position outside of the
arena that was used, but, for the vaulters, it was game over before they
even got started!
A few drop outs on the day
from the team meant that most of the athletes representing Team Dorset
had a shopping list of events to do, as well as some officiating.
Fortunately, we had Dick and Jan Edwards to assist on the officiating
front, though they were lucky not to be put in to an event as
competitors!
Determination and the
Dunkirk spirit were the order of the afternoon, with everyone rolling
their sleeves up and getting stuck in. Peter was determined to get under
14.0 for the 100m, but sadly just missed out (again); Guy was determined
to run everything up to 1500m, and did; Steve was determined to finish
the day still standing, and did; and Tim was just determined, as always.
In fact, we must mention
that Tim was just warming up for a week’s onslaught on his body, what
with the Ridgeway Relay the following day, and then his IOW challenge
each day next week. Will he make the South West League Match at
Millfield next Sunday as well? Watch this space…
