Southern Women’s League, Oxford – 24 April 2010
Peter
Impett reports.
Wimborne provided eight out of the thirteen athletes
who contested the first match of the Southern Women’s League at Oxford’s
Horspath Road track on Saturday 24th April. This is a league
in which Team Dorset could do well but 7th out of 10 was the
end result. Filling the slots is important and Team Dorset was thin in
the Senior Women generally and in the Under-15 throws particularly.
Wimborne, however, made a major contribution thanks to the hard work of
the team management.
Maddy V-J led the way. Her winning 70.9 in the 400
hurdles brings her ever closer to the English Schools entry standard.
She clocked 28.6 for 200 and 2.47.1 for the 800 backed up with a 20.19m
javelin for second in the B string to show her versatility. Lynn
Hutchings 12.25.2 for 3000 metres probably puts her into the rankings in
her age group and Paula Hine can be pleased with her 15.6 100 metre time
into a stiff breeze warming up for the County Championships. Hannah
Winton suffered the agony of a hamstring pull in the long jump but still
went out and did the business in the discus with 19m21.
Sharon Hutchings won the B string 1500 in 5.33.9 to
give Team Dorset maximum points and then jumped 3m47 in the long jump.
Abbie Hine was fourth in the 800 metres in 2.39.3 while still only an
under-13. Abbie Card’s 14.5 in the 100 brought second place in the B
string but she could only manage 1m30 in the high jump. Abbie and Kelly
Martin (15.0 in the 100 and 32.2 in the 200) combined with two girls
from Dorchester to storm the 4 X 100 relay in 56.1.
The next match is at Braunton on May 22nd.
Minibus leaves QE at 8.15 Ashdown at 8.30 and Dorchester Tesco at about
9.00am. Transport may be available from Blandford. If there are any
under-15s who would like some throws coaching I am sure that Glyn would
be happy to help.
