The first round in the 2008 Sportshall League took
place at Canford School on Saturday 27th October.
This colourful, vibrant, exciting and noisy event
is a great introduction to competition for our newer and younger club
members with the emphasis on fun and inclusion in athletics. Whilst the
emphasis is on fun, it is also a competition and it was great to see all
our athletes performing well and doing their best.

GIRLS
We’ll start our round-up with the girls. Both team
managers, Lorraine and Colin, had their hands full due to the number of
athletes available for the teams – at under 15, teams are made up of 4
athletes, and at under 13, teams are made up of 12 athletes. The under
15s could have had a second scoring team in fact.
At under 15, in addition to a team competition
(which Wimborne came 2nd equal out of 7 teams), there is an
individual competition. At the end of the competition Wimborne have 3
athletes in the top 10; in first place is Abby Sandford with 77 points
with Ellis Marples and Sarah Jordan joint 9th on 61 points.
Our other athletes in this age group (Rebecca Light, Laura Harvey and
Suzanne Bacon – on her debut) also put in some good strong performances.
My personal highlight was their heat winning 4x2 lap relay – a very
exciting race to watch.
The under 13 team finished 5th out of 7
teams by a mere half a point despite having a wide age variation within
the team, with athletes ranging in age from 8 up to 12 years. There is a
lot of depth in this age group and the youngsters can now build upon
their personal achievements at the next event. The established core of
‘veteran’ U13 athletes (Hannah Winton, Katie Cook, Phillippa James,
Rachel Welch & TC Hardy) led the way with some strong performances in
their individual events and encouraged and mentored the newcomers (Shae
Hardy, Kelly & Phoebe O’Mahoney, Chloe Downes, Kelly Snook, Carley
Kritzinger, Hope Gough, Georgia Collins), keeping them relaxed and ready
for competition.
BOYS
We had a one man under 15 boys team, namely Kyle
Wilson. In fact there were only 11 under 15 boys at the competition in 3
separate teams! Kyle had some good performances and ended up 7th
at the end of the competition.
Our star performers on the day were the under 13
boys. We had a team of 9 athletes and, despite not winning any scoring
events on the day, they ended up at the top of the table by 19.5 points.
This just goes to show what you can achieve as a team, even if none of
your athletes win their events. Again a core of ‘veteran’ U13 athletes
(Aaron McCoy, Jack Snook, Tom Broderick, Sam Neill & Liam Winton)
welcomed a number of newcomers to the team (Jack Downes, Matthew Curtis,
Adam Collins and Tim Neal). Fantastic effort from them all!
SPECTATORS
We are all very grateful for the help, support, and
encouragement given by the parents, giving up their time to get the
athletes to the competitions and hope that you can continue to do so.
Once again, well done to everyone involved on
Saturday, you should be justifiably proud of your results – let’s
continue to put our effort in to the training sessions and improve upon
these good performances.
The next Sportshall league match is at the Osprey
Centre in Portland on Saturday November 17th – check your
diaries!
