Sports:Hall – Canford – 28 October 2012
Paula Hine reports.
Wow! What a start!!!
The Canford Sports:Hall was as frantic
and noisy as ever for the first league match of the season. Wimborne had
33 athletes competing, for many it was their first time in a red vest,
and they certainly did the club proud. The girls’ under-13/11 Whizzkids
team finished in first place, some 30 points ahead of their closest
rivals from Bournemouth AC. This is a solid start, but only a small
lead that we will need to try and extend if we are to retain the title.
The younger girls, the Whippets team, finished in seventh place, a
position we can easily improve on if we work to field a full team in the
next match. The boys team, the Wasps, consisting mainly of under-11s,
had a terrific day, missing out on first place to Poole AC by only 1.5
points. If more under-13 athletes make themselves available for the next
match, I feel sure that a win is within their grasp.
In the under-15 event we fielded six
athletes (4 boys, 2 girls) our largest team for a few seasons. The
boys’ team, Ross Crabbe, Sean Bishop, Dominic Flavell and Ryan Long
won 6/7 events between them. Ross Crabbe is leading the individual
competition with Sean close behind in joint second. Scarlett Goldsack is
lying third in the girls’ individual competition after a great first
place in the 4-lap race, with Ellie White lying in 6th with a great win
in the shotputt event.
Who is the mystery red blur on
their way to another Wimborne victory?
There were many great performances on
the day but individual athletes and relay teams finishing in the top
three should be highlighted:
The girls under-13/11 Whizzkids team
had five event wins:
2 Lap - Charlotte Ayton
4 Lap and speed bounce - Pippa Hine
Vertical jump - Beth Riley
4x 2 lap relay - Caitlyn Hooper, Beth Riley, Charlotte Ayton, Pippa Hine.
Four second places:
2 lap and shotputt - Megan Hodd
4 x 2lap Guest Team - Megan Hodd, Becky Kent, Daniella Tomlin Eleanor
One third place:
Vertical jump - Daniella Tomlin
The boys under-13/11 Wasps team had two
4 lap - Tom Stokes
6 lap - Michael Johnson
Five second places:
Shotputt - Tom Stokes
2 lap - Alfie Beddow
6 lap - Fraser Vivian (under 11)
Circuit relay - Tom Morrisson, Derry Sowinski - Brown, Fraser Vivian,
4 x 2 lap relay - Tomas Barr, Alfie Beddow, Michael Johnson, Tom Stokes.
One third placing:
Parlauf relay - Sebastian Flavell, Tom
Morrisson (both under-11 years)
In summary, whilst we have had a really
good start to the Sports:Hall season, the highlight of the afternoon has
to be the number of athletes who went away with smiles on their faces,
having had a positive experience. We had a young team, many competing
for the first time, and they were well supported by their parents, all
of whom are now waiting to come back again for the next match on 24th
November - I hope!!
