Sportshall – WAC get off to great start – 2 November 2013

Paula Hine reports from Canford Sports Centre

Over 40 of Wimborne’s fine young athletes competed in the first match of Dorset’s Sportshall Athletics League, at Canford Sports Centre last Saturday, 2nd November. It was a tremendous afternoon full of fine performances, teamwork, hard work, good fun and cheering!!

Wimborne got off to a great start to the Sportshall season and after the first match are currently winning both the boys and the girls Under-13/11s match. The under-15s unfortunately struggled to fill full teams, but are lying 2nd overall in both the boys and the girls.

The afternoon kicked off with the very exciting and agility demanding circuit/obstacle relay race. Our athletes, rolled, crawled, jumped, huddled and sprinted their way to a win for both the girls and the boys. The teams were represented by Abbie Lovering, Lydia Hughes, Ava Keay, Lucy Gladdis, Derry Sowinski-Brown, Eddie May, Joe Baynham and Ben Butcher. Our boys guest team also finished 3rd in this event, they were represented by Joel Green, Tom Morrison, Adam Richardson and Seb Flavell.

Through out the afternoon there were many fine performances, especially from the 15 athletes who were competing in Sportshall, and often for Wimborne AC, for the first time. Sportshall athletics is great fun but it can be very noisy, chaotic and overwhelming. Our Sportshall newcomers were Erin Thickett, Amy and Ava Keay, Abbie Lovering, Lydia Hughes, Jake Chollander, Adam Richardson, Jack Wilcox, Aimee and Jasmine Figg, Daisy Middlebrook, Lydia Rusling, Charlotte Piper, Charlotte Laing and Olivia Sharpe. Well done to all of them!!

Several athletes also deserve a special mention for outstanding performances that afternoon:

Charlotte Ayton: 1st in 2 lap and triple jump
Becca May: 1st vertical jump
Erin Thickett: 1st paarlauf and 2nd vertical jump
Abbie Lovering: 1st paarlauf
Martha Taylor: 2nd shot putt
Amy Keay: 3rd in 4 lap
Fern Morrison: 3rd in 4 lap
Eleanor Riley: 3rd triple jump

Ben Holland: 1st triple jump and 2nd in 2 lap
Elliott Symes: 1st 6 lap and 3rd in shot putt
Mattie Effick: 1st speed bounce
Derry Sowinski-Brown: 1st paarlauf and 3rd in triple jump
Tom Morrison: 1st paarlauf
Ben Butcher: 2nd speed bounce and 4 lap
Jack Wilcox: 2nd speed bounce
Robert Hughes: 3rd in 6 lap and vertical jump.

The afternoon finished off with some very close and exciting relays. Our girls’ team, finishing second were Becca May, Erin Thickett, Amy Keay and Charlotte Ayton. The boys’ team finishing joint first, alongside the Poole AC team, were Elliott Symes, Fraser Vivian, Mattie Effick and Ben Holland.

Wimborne also had six under-15 athletes representing them that afternoon who also had some cracking results:

Ross Crabbe: 1st in 2 lap and long jump. Currently in 2nd position overall.
Dominic Flavell: 2nd in 4 lap, triple jump and shot. Currently in 3rd position overall.
Pippa Hine: 1st in 4 lap and speed bounce. Currently in 3rd position overall.
Caitlyn Hooper: 2nd speed bounce. Currently in 4th position overall.
Bethan Burley: 1st shot putt.

Wimborne athletes are now looking forward to another exciting match in a few weeks time.
