The 2016 Sportshall County Championships took place on the afternoon of
Saturday 23rd January at a very busy and bustling Canford
School. With over fifty competitors from Wimborne AC our red army was in
full force as young WACers were to be seen competing in nearly every
The County Championships, although often chaotic, do offer our younger
competitors an opportunity to compete against athletes of a similar age as
the timetable allows for some separate under-11 events.
There were so many notable performances and new PBs that I have included a
list of our Gold, Silver and Bronze winning achievements.
There were however a few athletes whose performances were particularly
exciting that I wish to highlight.
Firstly, Becca May who won the under-15 girls grand prix. With a win in
the vertical jump, two silvers in the 2 lap and shot was enough to secure
her top position in a very competitive field. Becca has been leading the
grand prix throughout the season and this was a well-deserved result.
Young Woody Van der Feltz was competing in his first ever Sportshall event
and after a tearful start put himself back on track to win the under-11
speed bounce and finish a very confident second in his 2 lap heat. I am
sure there is a lot more to come from this young man!!
Gus Meadwell ran a great heat and then finished second in the 2 lap final
in addition to winning the triple jump. Gus has only just started his
athletics training and I am looking forward to watching him compete on the
Finn Russell's win in the indoor high jump event was also very exciting
having jumped very little over the winter months he seemed to recall his
natural jumping technique with great ease. How high can he go?
The under-11 girls 4 lap final was particularly strong for WAC with four
of the five finalists in red. The girl from Dorchester was a very strong
winner but our younger Freya Blundell & Kitty Sharpe had a great race to
finish second and third respectively.
Katie Hulls win in the under-11 standing long jump also deserves a
mention as she jumped 15cms further than the next competitor and
out-jumped the winning under-13 girl. Over 2 metres soon for Katie!!
The under-11 girls triple jump result sheet is also particularly pleasing
with a 1,2,3 from the young WACers: Ella Dalton, Freya Blundell and Eva
Welstead. Well done girls!!
The under-13 boys followed the 1,2,3 clean sweep in the 6 lap race and
triple jump. Congratulations to Oscar Street, Joel Green and Oliver Rawles
in the 6 lap. And to Ben Butcher, Joe Baynham and Oscar Street in the
Ned Simmonds was a surprise winner in the vertical jump keep up the good
Many of our young WACers will now go on to represent Dorset in the
regional Sportshall event at Torbay we wish them GOOD LUCK!!
