Sportshall Athletics Match 2 – 29 October 2016

Paula Hine reports from Canford School

The second Sportshall meeting of the season took place on Saturday 29th October at Canford School.  The young WACer team had a number of athletes missing due to half term commitments, so we went for quality performances rather than quantity – and they certainly performed!!

First on the track were the obstacle relay races.  All four of the WACer squads rolled, crawled, jumped and sprinted their way to victory – what a great start to the afternoon’s proceedings.

The under 11’s only had one individual overall winner on the track and that was Kitty Sharpe in the 2 lap race.  Kitty also went on to win the speed bounce event narrowly beating Amy Darragh who bounced into second.  There were some other great wins for both boys and girls in the field – Isabella Cox and Charlie Naish in the vertical jump, George Butcher in the speed bounce, Oscar Davis in the chest push, and Poppy Darragh in the target throw.  Three athletes also finished in second place overall, Ruby Sargeant in the chest push, Oscar Wade in both the long jump and the target throw events.  Both the boys and the girls under 11 teams are leading the competition as they prepare to perform again in match three in December.

Back on the track Katie Hull was our only individual under 13 winner.  She won the under 13 girls 2 lap race.  Tilly Coombs and Sarah Graham ran a fantastic team Parlauf to win the 8 laps overall.  Ben Butcher ran a tight 4 lap race to finish second.  On the field we had slightly more success with Katie Hull winning the long jump, Emma Salkeld the vertical jump, Ben Butcher in the triple jump.  Oscar Street had a great leap to finish second in the long jump and Ben Butcher finished off his day with a solid second in the speed bounce.

In the under 15 competition the athletes compete as individuals.  WAC had four boys and one girl taking part.  Robert Hughes was our strongest athlete overall finishing second in all three of his events.

Well done to all WACers who took part and GOOD LUCK in match three in December!!
