South West Schools Championships – Exeter – 20 June 2009
Following hot on the heels
of the Dorset County Schools Championships the previous weekend, the
2009 South West Schools Championships took place on Saturday 20th
June.
For those athletes that
performed well enough at the county event, they were offered the
opportunity to represent Dorset in the South West Championships.
Wimborne AC were represented by Matt Curtis and Jack Snook, both in the
Junior Boys category, and Maddy Vaughan-Johncey in the Senior Girls
category.
Maddy had been selected
for the 400m Hurdles and performed well to improve her PB to 71.3
seconds finishing 4th. She also took part in the 4x100 relay at the end
of the day.
Both the boys had been
selected for Pole Vault and, on the day, both achieved podium positions.
Matt bagged the bronze medal with a new PB of 2.60m, and Jack was
crowned South West Champion 2009 with a PB equalling 2.90m. It was a
good win for Jack as he was competing against the athlete that he is
currently sharing the number 1 ranking position in the South West (both
sharing a 2.90 PB).
In addition to Pole Vault,
Matt was also selected for the 80m Hurdles. In a straight final
containing 10 athletes, Matt was given 5th place. It was a
very close finish with athletes in 4th, 5th,6th
and 7th all being given the same time of 12.9s, which is
another PB for Matt.
Jack rounded off his
afternoon’s work with the lead leg in the 4x100m relay.
Great effort everyone!
