South-West XC Championships  – 6 January 2013 – Bicton

WAC’s under-15 girls second in South-West England.

An impressive line-up of green vests.
The Dorset under-17 men came 2nd in the South West Champs

The cross-country course at Bicton is a pretty challenging one at the best of times, but with all the wet weather of late, the ground was even heavier than usual making those climbs even more strength-sapping than usual.

The star performances on the team front for Dorset came from the under-15 girls and the under-17 men, both recorded second places. The best performance from a Wimborne team in the club competition came from our under-15 girls, they came in second in South-West England with Abi Hine, Maddie Williams, Abi Deeble and Ella Hearne getting the job done.

Although we were travelling to Bicton with five Dorset Champions in our ranks, it just wasn’t our day, and none of them were able to take the next step up and claim a South-West England Champions title. However, a couple of our Champions will still be in the same age group next year and will have another bite of the cherry in 2014.

One new feature this year was the addition of a non-championship under-11s race. There were six Dorset athletes taking part in these races, four of them from Wimborne. It was great to see Max Meadwell, Jessica Bourne and Bethanie and Isabelle Kingswell-Farr experiencing the toughest cross-country challenge that they have taken on for the club yet.

The numbers representing Dorset in the South West England Cross-Country Championships has steadily increased over the years. We were a little unlucky as the number of Dorset runners should have been even higher but illness and injury robbed us of a few athletes prior to the event, and our bad luck continued on the day with injury issues effecting Elise Gill and Josh Downie, both of whom were wearing county colours for the first time, they both recording their first ever DNFs.

Also troubled by injury was Charlotte Bourne. Charlotte has been on the road to recovery (she’d missed the County Champs in December) but this race came just a little to early for her. Clearly Charlotte needs a little longer to recover and although she finished her race she wasn’t able to show what she can really do. Simon, Charlotte’s dad, had even less luck he pulled out of the men’s race with an achilles problem.

Of the Wimborne athletes a number made their debuts as County runners, apart from those already mentioned we also had Ranulph Cameron, Abi Deeble, Rich House, Pete Kingswell-Farr, Tom Stokes, Elliott Symes and  Matt Yates pulling on green vests for the first time.
