A podium in the Tarrant Valley – 21 July 2013

Ryan Walbridge reports.

On Sunday 21 July I ran the Tarrant Valley 10K race along with some other Wimborne AC roadrunners. I only had a short trip down the road to the next village where this event was being held. The heat meant the warm up was short and out of the sun, as I had to be hydrated because of the long hard run I soon had to undertake. Before I knew it the race was soon to begin. There were 138 people at the start line all ready to go. The starter’s gun went off, and the race had begun. Within the first 200 metres the front pack was made and we headed off. After a mile this split with the winner of the race at the end pulling away from us leaving three. Me, Steve [Wyatt] and John Bassinder of Poole AC stayed together throughout the race.

This did have a problem as we all went the wrong way by 100 metres as we took the wrong turn (bad for me – being a local). The race was hard-going as most of it was on gravel farm tracks and some road. Most of the tracks were in the sunlight with the heat right on top of us. Soon after 30mins we were in to the final mile, which meant I could use some of my speed. Knowing it was downhill I sped up pulling away from Steve but the Poole AC runner knew my plan and stuck with me all the way. Having put too much effort in going down the hill and on part of the road I had none left in the tank, I lost in a sprint finish, but the Poole AC runner got a well-deserved second and me closely on his heels in third.

This meant I had a prize to collect, which was not the best, I have to admit, but a prize nonetheless. It was a hamper with loads of healthy food such as pasta, wraps, olives and non-alcoholic wine. Not only did I get third prize, I was second under-20 back and first village runner home. Not bad when you think of the heat and being my first 10k race in a year.
