Dorset county took 4 teams
to this year’s South West Regional Sportshall Final held in Torbay on 10th
February.
Wimborne athletes were
selected in three of the four age groups:
U13 Girls: Hannah
Winton, Phillippa James & ‘TC’ Hardy
U13 Boys: Aaron
McCoy & Jack Snook
U15 Girls: Sarah
Jordan
In the U13 Girls, Hannah
came away with an individual gold medal in the standing triple jump and
overall the team came fourth, only 3 points behind third
place Cornwall. Phillippa and ‘TC’ both put in solid performances in
their individual events.
In the U13 Boys, Jack and
Aaron both put in good performances in the high jump helping the team to
an agonising second place overall, a mere 26 points behind the champions
Avon. It was a valiant effort by all the boys, given that they were one
athlete short of a full team and could not cover all the field events,
and a shame that they did not qualify for the UK Final on the day.
It was a different story
in the U15 Girls age group. Sarah had been asked to travel to Torbay as
a reserve athlete, not expecting to compete. However, she had the
opportunity to run the first leg of the 4 x 2 lap relay, and what a
storming effort it was! Sarah ran very well to hand over in the lead and
despite the baton being dropped later in the relay the Dorset team won
by a very narrow margin. Result: one gold medal for Sarah! In fact the
U15 Girls team did so well that they were crowned South West Region
Champions and have all been selected to represent the county at the UK
Final in Birmingham. Well done Sarah, and well done the girls team!
We should also
congratulate Abby Sandford (now Wimborne AC 2nd claim) who
won a very tight competition for the U15 Girls individual title, Her
winning margin was a solitary point!
To cap a fine afternoon of
achievement, Dorset also won both the individual and team title in the
U15 Boys age group, and they will also be going forward to join the
girls at the UK Final.
Well done to everyone who
competed.
