Wayfarers Relays – 10 September 2011
Sharon Hutchings reports.
On 10 September Wimborne AC took five teams to the annual Wayfarers
event. Overall the weather was dull with the wind getting up towards the
end but this did not get our team spirit down.
First to set out for our teams was Callum Kennedy, Chloe Morris, Lynn
Hutchings, Rich House and Mark Copeland. The junior boys’ team got off
to a cracking start with Callum moving into second place fairly soon.
Mark and Rich also did well as they both came in together with Mark just
nipping in front of Rich at the finish. Lynn also did well, as did Chloe
giving the ‘Girls Allowed’ team a good start.
Mark: Good … or bad?
Next around the tracks were Ryan Walbridge, Simon Bourne, Ian Kennedy,
Kim Brackley and Charlotte Bourne. The junior boy’s team did well yet
again with Ryan doing one better than Callum by coming in first. Simon
took over from Mark and just beat Ian who took over from Rich. Charlotte
also did well and kept going strong right to the finish.
Charlotte looking confident and in control
Ryan looking strong towards the finish
Jordan Symington got off to a good start for the junior boys and later
passed onto Matt Curtis who finished off their great performance for the
day. ‘Scooter’ also did very well for ‘Girls Allowed’ and later passed
onto Callum, who I’m sure must have been wearing a wig to get into the
girls’ team.
Callum gives the ‘thumbs up’
Next up for the ladies’ team was Wendy Kennedy followed by Michele
Whitehurst. Both members of the team looked strong at the end of the
course, especially Michele, even though she hadn’t been feeling well
before the race.
Once Ian and Simon had come in Kelly Williams and John Hutchings set
off. John took over for Becka Hughes as she sadly wasn’t well enough to
participate. Both of them looked like they had a good run so well done
to them. They then passed on to Daryl Davies and Phil Whitehurst. Daryl
did extremely well as he has been suffering with an injury for quite
some time now and hasn’t been running very much lately. Phil also did
well and I must say he looked very happy towards the finish.
A very happy Phil
Here comes the bit we’ve all been waiting for … Bob Caines vs. Ed
Arnold. These two both did very well and I think they may have been the
two most competitive runners of the day. This could be due to the fact
they wanted to beat each other’s time. Both of them headed out strong
and also managed to give a smile when they were finishing. Bob just beat
Ed’s time but well done to both of them just the same.
Who are these handsome young men?
For the last two legs we had Gerry Hutchings and John again. John did
very well by doing two legs, Gerry also did well as he looked like he
was gritting his teeth all the way to the end. (Perhaps this was due to
his Usain Bolt impression before he set off!).
Is it a bird? … Is it a plane? … No, it’s Gerry!
