Cross-country here we come! – 9 October 2016

WAC under-15s on the start line

Ian Kennedy reports on the WXC opener at Canford Heath

Well, we’re off … the first cross-country fixture of the 2016/2017 season.  Despite being relatively lightly represented in the senior ranks for both men and women we had almost 50 athletes in red vests.

There was good turnout from the under-11s.  For the girls you could throw a blanket over our first three – Kate Simmonds, Amelia Chaffey and Ruby Sergeant.  They were separated by just four seconds.  Grace Chaffey, Lucie Simmonds and Alana Fairchild completed our under-11 girls’ team.  Our under-11 boys were led home by George Butcher.  Our first three home score for the team, and debutant Oscar Davis and Woody van der Feltz claimed the other scoring positions.  Woody had his brother Albert, and Thomas Jeffery in close attendance with Jack Doran, another debutant, completing the team.

We had just three under-13 girls competing, and in a field of more than 30, all three claimed top 10 positions.  This is despite two of our three making WAC cross-country debuts.  One of those debutants, Abbi Slade, led the team home with excellent support from Ella Jeffery and Sarah Graham.

In the under-13 boys, two of our three athletes made it into top three positions.  Ollie Rawles was first red home, with a spirited debut from Joe Goodwin in third.  Our final point-scorer was Matthew Lissenburg.  The team was completed by Joe Healey, Ben Butcher, Jay Dunn and Ben Harwood.

The under-15s got away on a combined boys and girls start, and almost half the field was in Wimborne red. Abbie Lovering was a race winner here against some quality opposition. Amy Mercer (her best cross-country race yet in a red vest) and Martha Pawson were our other point scorers for the girls and aside from these, Demi Goddard, Beth Kingswell-Farr, Holly Nixon and Jess Bourne also made the top 12. The team was completed by Hannah Fairchild, Izzie Kingswell-Farr and, making her debut, Emma Graham. For the boys the reds were led home by Ben Martin in 3rd and he got good support from Charlie Davies and Jack Moss-Willcox. There was an impressive start from XC debutant Josh Davey, just one second outside the team scoring positions. Josh Jack, Zach Fenwick and John Gale completed out under-15 boys team.

In the under-17s we only needed two to score, which was just as well in the case of the men – we only had Dan Baynham and Elliott Symes.  They were placed in 5th and 6th.  For the girls there was an impressive 3rd place from Hannah Slater with Caitlin Rogers taking the other scoring position in 6th.  The team was completed by Minty Stubbs.

We only just had enough runners for teams in the senior categories too.  In the case of the women we were fortunate to be able to include two debutants – Alicia Pawson and Di Jack.  They provided important support to Maddie Williams.  Apart from her contribution to the senior women’s team, Maddie claimed 3rd place as an under-20.

The men’s team was led home, as it was for pretty well all of last season, by Ryan Walbridge, with another great contributor to the men’s side, Pete Kingswell-Farr next in.  It was great to welcome back Rich House after a spell away from cross-country, and he completed our scorers.

Solid stuff from the red vests on the day, on a fairly benign course, which gently leads us to the stiffer tests ahead.
