Schools XC County Champions x 3 for WAC – 18 January 2018

Ian Kennedy reports from King’s Park

Grace on the way to becoming County Champion

More than 50 Wimborne athletes were amongst the 600-plus athletes who competed at the Dorset County Championships at King’s Park on 18 January. Quite apart from being a championship event in its own right, it is also the first step on the road that will take Dorset’s best (in the Juniors, Inters & Seniors – the Minors only progress as far as the regional championships) through to the English Schools Championships, to be held this year at Temple Newsam Park near Leeds on 17 March. The championship is an important race in which to compete in order to be considered for the Dorset team for the subsequent races.

For the most part the weather at King’s Park was good, but for a squall that lasted little more than 10 minutes of which the Junior Girls took the full brunt. Eye-catching results included the second places achieved by our Minors – Iris Courtney and Tristan Green – cracking performances for two athletes in their rookie seasons. For the girls there were also strong performances from Kate Simmonds, Isabella Cox, Ruby Sargeant and Amelia Chaffey. In the Minor Boys Oscar Davis was a top 10 finisher too.
