Inter-Counties cross-country quagmire  – 10 March 2018

Ian Kennedy reports from Prestwold Hall

Iris, Isabella and Kate post-race at the mudfest that was the Inter-Counties XC Champs

This race came the week after the heaviest snowfall for years in central and southern England. The big thaw was in progress, the end result was that the course, and all surrounding spectating areas turned into a total quagmire. This was the muddiest cross-country race we’ve encountered for a very long time.

Without a shadow of doubt, the outstanding performance here from a Dorset athlete came from Poole AC’s Will Rabjohns. His race win was achieved while being ‘year-young’, he’s had an incredible season. It’s a clean sweep Dorset Champion, Dorset Schools Champion,  South West Inter-Counties Champion, South West Schools Champion, South of England Champion, National Champion, and here he became Inter-Counties Champion in his age-group.

Grace Copeland produced the best performance from a Dorset girl when she claimed 8th place. This race also doubled as the final race in the British Cross Challenge series. Grace’s performance at Prestwold Hall put her on the podium in 2nd place in the British Cross Challenge series. Another Dorset athlete, senior woman Verity Ockenden, also climbed onto the podium in the British Cross Challenge. Verity won bronze.

WAC made a big contribution to the Dorset team in the junior age groups. Five of the county teams were led home by a Wimborne athlete – Sarah Graham, Emily Shaw, Ben Martin (with Seth Lake next in that age-group), Grace Copeland and Minty Stubbs. Our biggest contributions came in the under-13 girls and under-15 boys where 5 of the 8 were from Wimborne, and we had 4 in the under-17s women’s team too. The strongest team performance came in the under-15 girls where Dorset came 11th, and 14th from the under-17 women was also a strong showing.

This course provided a huge challenge in the conditions we found, the truth is that all who took part were heroes!
