Yankee Homecoming 10miles
WACer goes west … Iain
On a recent trip to Boston, Massachusetts l managed
to sneak the WACer vest into the suitcase. I had tentatively entered the
Yankee Homecoming 10 mile road race at Newburyport, a race in its 50th
consecutive year. Due to the high temperatures/ humidity and time
changes l was unsure how well this Brit abroad would cope!
As it turned out, the race was superb ... great
atmosphere, really well organised, 3,000 runners, incredible support and
thankfully hosepipes showering us with cool water all the way round. If
you were fast enough you had a Police motorbike (looked like Chips,
remember him?) in front of you to set the pace. My pace was well short
of my 66min pb, finishing in 71min 45sec, this was no disappointment as
l set my new record for drinking water and gatorade due to the humidity.
The Massachusetts/New Hampshire states are mad for
running and the calendar is full of great events, l was very lucky to
experience this at first hand. How far has the WACer vest travelled to
enter a race, has anyone ever worn ‘the red’ down under in Oz?
