Aldershot (WYAL) – 22 July 2012

Peter Impett reports from the closing meeting of the Wessex Young Athletes League track & field season.

Pitched against two of the top five in the league and with four top under-13s representing Dorset at the Southern Inter-Counties, Wimborne Athletic Club scoring opportunities were always going to be limited in the final Wessex League match at Aldershot. The result on the day was Team Kennet 487, Camberley 470.5, Aldershot 336, Wimborne 271.5 and Poole Runners 96. These results put Wimborne on 12 points in 11th position, Poole AC on 8 points in 14th position, Bournemouth on 7 points  in 15th position and Poole Runners with 4 points in 20th position in the final league table.

Long jump provided a large slice of Wimborne’s points where Matt Curtis smashed the club under-17 record by over a foot to record 6m22. Joel Mariner 5m30 won the ‘B string’ for maximum points. The under-15 boys repeated the performance with Cameron Stark winning with 5m06 and Ross Crabbe exceeding five metres for the first time with a ‘B string’ winning 5m01. In the under-13 girls Becky Kent was second in the under-13s with 3m83. A further double was achieved when Jason Sotheran won the under-15 1500m in 4.34.4 and Piers Copeland won the ‘B string’ in 4.36.8. The under-15s were very strong on the day and only just missed out on another club record with 50.8 for the relay. Fraser Read was second in the 400m in 58.6 and Ross Crabbe won the ‘B string’ in 60.2.

In the throws Ellie White was second in the under-15 shot 8m24 and Sian Lynk was second in the under-13s 5m88. Matt Curtis was second in the under-17s discus 30m80, Jason Sotheran second in the under-15 discus 20m93 and Becky Kent second in the under-13 girls 14m97. Kelly Snook won the ‘B string’ under-15 javelin with 12m27, Tom Stokes was second in the under-13 800 metres with a 2.33.6 personal best and Sian Lynk was second in the under-13 hurdles in 13.4.
