YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE – BASINGSTOKE - 31 May 2009
It was a really hot
afternoon for this, the 3rd fixture in the National Young
Athletes League. The venue, this time, was relatively close for us, but
it still meant an 8:15 start at Ashdown.
Hopes were high that we
could get a larger turnout of athletes this time, but sadly this was not
to be the case. We still had holes in the event programme which we could
not fill.
That said it was probably
our best result so far in this league. Overall Team Dorset came 3rd,
just 30 points behind 2nd placed Woodford Green and 50 points
behind 1st placed Croydon. This result has pushed us up to 4th
from bottom in the Southern Premier League Table (the top of the
relegation zone) – it will be interesting to see whether we can escape
from that relegation zone in the last two matches of the season.
There were more excellent
performances from our Wimborne athletes, in what were generally good
conditions – especially for the sprinters. There was a bit of a breeze
however which affected the longer distance and pole vault competitors.
In the under 13 age group,
Sharon Hutchings and Abbie Hine both ran very good races in the 1200m.
For Sharon this was the first time out at this particular distance, and
immediately recorded a grade 4 performance. Abbie also recorded a grade
4 performance by beating her previous best by some 11 seconds.
Our under 15
representatives also did very well, though, unfortunately Hannah injured
herself during the Long Jump competition, and was unable to take any
further part in the fixture. Abi Card made full use of the conditions,
equalling her PB for 100m and improving her 200m best. Alwyn Harries
also improved his 200m best, though was just shy of equalling his 100m
time. Jack Snook continues his good form in the Pole Vault, but the
surprise from him was his Javelin throw which improved on his previous
best by some 10 metres. Matt Curtis had an exceptional afternoon,
recording PBs in the 80m Hurdles, High Jump, and Pole Vault.
Well done to all our
athletes.
A big thank you and well
done also to all the volunteers who helped out with officiating at this
fixture; this also helps with points for the team.
The next fixture is on
Sunday 21st June.
