Young Athletes
League – Eton – 21 June 2009
The penultimate match of
the league was a real nail biter at the Thames Valley Athletic Centre in
Eton. Of the four teams competing, two were toughing it out at the top
of the league (Windsor Slough & Eton, and Enfield & Haringey) and two
were battling it out at the relegation zone (Bedford and Team Dorset).
True to form the
competition developed as two separate matches, equally closely fought.
Throughout the afternoon Team Dorset were playing catch up to Bedord,
the difference in points never more than five or so. By the time the
relays started. Team Dorset had managed to overhaul Bedford and held a
very slender lead.
It was everything to play
for in each relay and the only other event left – the 3000m
steeplechase. In the sprint relays, the girls u13 and u15 teams managed
to create a bit more daylight between us and Bedford, however, the gap
was shortened again as Bedford got the better of us in the u17 race.
Bedford clawed back still more as they managed to beat Team Dorset in
all the boys sprint relays.
Next came the
steeplechase, and this proved to be crucial. Both ‘A’ and ‘B’ string
runners for Team Dorset beat their rivals from Bedford. Now it was down
to the last 3 relays of the day. In the girls u17 4x300m race, Bedford
reduced the Team Dorset lead over them to just 1 point. The u15 boys
4x400m squad managed to beat Bedford and stretched the difference to 2
points. Finally, the u17 4x400m squad managed to secure Team Dorset 3rd
place overall in the match by a mere 4 points. – What an afternoon!
Wimborne young athletes
played their part in this exciting match. In the U13 age category,
Sharon Hutchings gained maximum points in her 800m and Abbie Hine picked
up 3rd place in her 1200m.
We also had four U15
athletes representing WAC. Abi Card picked up two 3rd places
in the 200m and High Jump (pb in the latter) and also competed in the
4x100m relay. Alwyn Harries picked up three 2nd places in
100m, 200m (equalled pb), and Discus. Matt Curtis picked up 1st
place in Pole Vault ‘B’ string (equalled pb), and two 2nd
places in High Jump and 80m Hurdles. Jack Snook picked up 1st
place in Pole Vault ‘A’ string (equalled pb), 3rd place in
Javelin, and 4th place in Hammer. We should not forget that
Alwyn and Matt also took part in the 4x100m relay.
Well done everyone!
