The reds assemble for the 4x100m relay in another fine meeting for WAC
The under-15 boys proved to be the heroes of the Wessex Young Athletes
League match at Swindon on Sunday. Ryan Webb’s 1m75 in the high jump was
the high point of the day – a new personal best and a grade 1 standard.
Ryan also won the 80 metres hurdles in 13.5s with Dominic Flavell
winning the ‘B string’ in 15.4s. The squad were pretty dominant on the
track with Cameron Stark winning the ‘A string’ 200m in 27.2s and coming
second in the 100m in 13.4s. Fraser Read won the ‘B string’ 100m in 13.5
and the ‘A string’ 400m in 57.8 (a new PB). Jason Sotheran cruised the
1500m in 4.35.6 but Piers Copeland missed out by a nose in the 800m
recording the same time as the winner in 2.19.7. Cameron Stark was
second in the long jump with 5m29 with Ross Crabbe winning the ‘B
string’ 4m67 and winning the ‘B string’ 400 in 60.1. The boys wrapped
it up with an emphatic 51.3s win in the relay.
The under-13 girls team manager used the event to experiment prior to
the critical South West League match at Braunton next week. It didn’t
stop the girls piling up the points. Pippa Hine won the 100m in 14.2s
and the 200m in 30.0s despite exceptionally strong headwinds. Grace
Copeland used all her tactical nous to outwit Portsmouth’s Maisie Grice
in the home straight to win the 800m in 2.32.8s. Bethan Burley stormed
the 70m hurdles in 12.6s and these three were joined by Charlotte Ayton
to take bragging rights in the relay winning and beating Bournemouth in
a time of 58.5s. Bethan Burley was second in the discus with 19m00,
Charlotte Ayton was second in the javelin with 19m16 and Becca May won
the ‘B string’ shot with 5.00 metres.
Tom Bourne 4.58.8 led Liam Murphy Parry 5.13.2 to a double win in the
1500m at under-13 level. Alfie Beddow won the javelin with 24m90 and Tom
Bourne was second in the discus 14m41.
Sharon Hutchings led the charge for the under-17 women winning the 800m
in 2.19.6 and was second in the 300m in 42.9. Chloe Morris won the ‘B
string’ in 2.45.0 and the discus in 15m01. Rebecca Skeats was second in
the 1500m 5.53.1 and the javelin in 11m51 with Sarah Cunningham coming
second in the 100m in 15.6s. Kelly Snook had a good day for the
under-15s winning the 100m in 15.1s and coming second in the high jump
1m45. Scarlett Goldsack was second in the long jump recording 4m41.
