
Wimborne Athletic Club pressed home their advantage in the final South West League match of the season at Exeter on Sunday to win the league and secure five of the nine trophies on offer. Leading after three matches but with Taunton AC in hot pursuit Wimborne Team managers led by Paula Hine secured a final convincing win, reviving memories of their Championship win in 2017
Star performance of the day came from Ryan Webb with a season’s best 2metres15 Senior Men’s high jump and Joe Miles on 1m90 secured maximum points for the club. Max Chater 1m43 and Ed Salisbury 1m40 repeated the double in the under 13s and Jake Roberts added more top points with 1m60 in the under 15s. Jake was also second in the shot with 10m08. Kane Aubrey threw 44m32 to win the under 17 discus following his silver medal in the UK Under 17 national championships only the day before. He and Joe Goodwin then scored maximum points in the hammer with 39m73 and 37m48 respectively. Harry Wood’s 4m83 was a top level winning performance for Wimborne in the under 13 boys long jump.
Isabella Cox moved up to the under 17 age group and recorded a personal best 2m15 in the pole vault while Katie and Lucy Simmonds tied for third place in the under 15s with personal bests 1m85. Rob Hughes enjoyed his day. He won the under 20 triple jump with 11m59 and only just missed out on a high jump win with 1m70 on countback- Jonah Carter taking third place with 1m65. India West was second in the under 13 long jump on 4m12 and Amelia Riley was third in the high jump with 1m25. Joe Miles was second in the triple jump with 12m48 and Munashe Ingram secured second place with her 21.55 under 17 discus.
On the track Curtis Ormerod Taylor won the 200 metres in 22.46 in the under 20 men age group and was second in the 100 metres with 11.51. Competiton amongst the under 13 boys remains hot and while Harry Wood got the better of Harry Bunting in the 100, Harry Bunting returned the favour with a 27.24 personal best in the 200 for third place ahead of Harry Wood. Ronnie DeBique was third in the senior 400 metre hurdles in a time of 61.72 and Dan Baynham was third in the under 20 800 metres in 2.13.07.
Wimborne’s under 13 boys relay team won by a country mile in 54.94 while the senior men had to work a little harder for their 45.78 win.
